Retail Traffic Index TM

Retail Traffic Indices

The UK's first* and only true Retail Traffic Index (RTI)

* Established 1998

As well as counting retail traffic in individual client stores, SPSL also combines this data to produce the most relied upon and credible Retail Traffic Index in the UK.

Spsl's series of RTI'S are the most representative of the UK retail scene - consisting of footfall from the broadest selection of retail brands retail sectors and locations.

By capturing retail traffic data in over 4600 different outlets (excluding the grocery, convenience and minor retail service sectors) across the UK, we capture data on over 1.02bn shoppers per year. We monitor retail outlets across high streets, retail parks, designer outlets, shopping centres and transport hubs. We then supply our clients with national indices to show them the efficiency of their own marketing promotions as well as brand strength, relative to the rest of UK over time.

The sample sectors (based on Office of National Statistics delineators) include: high street fashion clothing and shoes, body care and beauty products, home improvements and DIY, stationery and books, music and entertainment, and mobile phones and communications. It's as close as possible to the make-up of the UK retail market.

The footfall data you can trust

We use indexed traffic rather than aggregate total traffic flow so that each store reports equally to the overall index value. The geographical sample covers England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, with an option of mainland Britain only.

The sample size and composition is updated three times a year to check relevance and accuracy and to avoid any sample bias. So that clients can fine tune their retail offer, reports are broken down into specialist categories:
